CO₂ Emissions a Problem? We Turn It into a Solution.
The construction sector is responsible for a significant share of global CO₂ emissions. Traditional materials like cement place a heavy burden on the environment. With carbonation, we transform CO₂ and industrial residues into strong, sustainable building materials that contribute to a circular economy and reduce the ecological footprint.
Carbstone®: Transforming CO₂ into Sustainable Building Materials
Carbstone® is an technology that converts CO₂ and industrial residual streams, such as steel slags, into durable building materials. By chemically binding CO₂ to calcium- and magnesium-rich materials, Carbstone® eliminates the need for cement and produces strong, CO₂-negative construction products.
This technology provides a double environmental benefit: permanent CO₂ storage and elimination of primary raw materials like cement. It reduces the ecological footprint while creating new economic opportunities by transforming waste into valuable, circular products.
From Robust Construction Blocks to Refined Design Materials
Our Carbstone® technology produces a wide range of sustainable building materials that meet the highest technical standards and are suitable for diverse applications.
Applications include:
Building blocks: Eco-friendly and durable alternatives to concrete blocks.
Façade bricks: Aesthetic and sustainable solutions for façades.
Paving stones and curbs: Robust materials for infrastructure and paving.
Briquettes: Recycled non-ferrous residues for industrial applications.
Tiles and roofing materials – Sustainable materials for floors and roofs.
...
Carbstone® is the result of years of research and collaboration, redefining the future of construction.
History of Carbstone® technology
The Carbstone® technology has emerged from years of intensive research and collaboration. Since 2006, Orbix, together with partners such as VITO, has worked on the development and refinement of the carbonation process. What began with the discovery that steel slags harden under the influence of CO₂ in the air has evolved into a groundbreaking technology that is redefining the future of the construction sector.
Today, Orbix is a leading player in the environmentally friendly processing of secondary raw materials. Our goal is to further develop the technology and make it more widely applicable, so that we can make a significant contribution to solving the CO₂ problem and promoting a circular economy.
The future of Carbstone
At Orbix, we continue to innovate. Our pilot plant in Farciennes plays a key role in the further development and scaling up of sustainable technologies, such as Carbstone® technology. We demonstrate the strength of our innovation through various projects:
- Iceberg Project: Here, we recycle the concrete from old Colruyt stores to create new bricks for new stores through carbonation. This showcases how circular innovation works in practice.
- CO₂ncrEAT Project: Together with partners such as Lhoist, Fluxys, and Prefere, we extract CO₂ directly from flue gases and use it in our carbonation process. This project introduces a new dimension in sustainability and CO₂ reuse.
These projects push the boundaries of sustainability and help us build a circular, CO₂-neutral future.
